Mother's Day Showcase: A Quilt Show, Piano Music, and a New Greenhouse
Mother’s Day is all about celebrating Moms and all that they do for us. But, it’s not just remembering to buy them a gift or a card; it’s about being there to spend time with them, to let them know how much we appreciate them and all they do for us. So this Mother’s Day, I challenge you to go outside the box and find a gift or experience that is truly unique and special to give to your Mom this Mother’s Day.
Mothers are special, and work hard every day to make their families’ lives happy, while creating a streamlined system behind the scenes to ensure that everything runs smoothly in the house and also outside the house. Moms work hard; just taking care of the kids, house, job, etc. is enough, but they go above and beyond to make sure that everyone is taken care of, usually with their needs taken care of last. This Mother’s Day, make it your goal to make sure Mom is taken care of for at least one day (if not every day), and show her how much she means to you. Even if your Mom may no longer be with us, she is with us in spirit and knows you are thinking of her.
So, even if your Mom is here with you or in spirit, take some time to reflect, to think on what she means to you, what activities you two would do together, and find that happy, nostalgic feeling to bring with you on Mother’s Day. Take that feeling, that hobby you would do together, that memory, that one moment or event that sticks in your mind as a happy memory that you connect with your Mom, and make that into an experience or gift to give to her this Mother’s Day.
For example, my Mom and I enjoy our daily coffee time, and that time together is special to us, so instead of giving her a gift card for coffee, I researched to find the perfect outing or experience we could do together that reflects our happy moments, and our mother daughter relationship. I found a farmer’s market/maker’s market with a coffee shop nearby and made an invite to go together. That way, we can experience our favorite thing to do together: have coffee, talk about everything, and laugh until we cry, and share Mother’s Day together.
So, think about what experiences you and your Mom may have had together. Maybe it was sewing or cooking or gardening or quilting. Grand Meadows Senior Living in Glencoe took this idea and created a Mother’s Day program out of the quilting that their residents have done in the past. On May 8th, 2026, Grand Meadows showcased the residents’ quilts in a walk-through show, inviting family members or children of the residents to share in the quilts. While their families were milling around admiring the talented quilts, piano music drifted in the background. Alyson Winn-Lagergren, from In the Key of Bb Music Studio, performed soothing background music for the event. Grand Meadows curated the perfect atmosphere for Mothers to be appreciated for their talents, spend time with their loved ones, and showcased their work with a program and show, including music to celebrate them as well.
If you and your Mom are into flowers or gardening, or if you want to surprise your Mom with flowers, Fleet Supply in town has a new greenhouse that just went up in late April. They have a variety of flowers and vegetables to plant, along with pre-done flower pots for ease of gift-giving. If you want to create an experience with your Mom on Mother’s Day, you could buy some of her favorite flowers or plants and plant them in a pot or garden together. In this way, you are able to spend time together, creating new memories in the making.
Even if your Mom is with you in person or in spirit, take a minute to think of those things you used to do together, and really take time to remember, to feel, those memories. You will feel more connected to her in those moments. Then, if you are so moved, you could do that activity on Mother’s Day to remember her and spend time with her in person or in memory.
